Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has declared exceptional young strike pair Federico Macheda and Javier Hernandez will not be packed off on loan this season, but instead will fight for regular football at Old Trafford.

The duo were both on the score sheet in Wednesday's 5-2 demolition of the Major League Soccer All-Stars. With Michael Owen struggling for fitness and Dimitar Berbatov yet to convince, the starlets are set to push for a first team place after being linked with temporary moves to Palermo and Valencia respectively.

Speaking to the Press Association in Houston, Texas, Ferguson heaped praise on his sprightly centre forwards.

"I need to keep Macheda and Hernandez," Ferguson stated.

"There was a lot of purpose in the way they played their football.

"To play for a club like this is not just about talent. You need something else and they've got something else. I am pleased with that."

Both strikers will have to impress if they are to oust United's established forwards, however. According to Castrol Football and their extensive analysis of everything football related, United striker Wayne Rooney was the fourth best player in Europe last season, while Dimitar Berbatov was just inside the top 50, at 47th.
