Roberto Mancini has confirmed that he is yet to decide on who will start in goal for Manchester City this season.

Joe Hart spent last season on loan at Birmingham City and impressed hugely during his spell at St Andrew’s, earning a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Hart had looked set to start the season in goal after Shay Given was ruled out of City’s opening few games with a shoulder injury, but the Irishman has returned to fitness earlier than expected and could now regain his place in the starting line-up.

Mancini said earlier this summer that Hart will not be loaned out again this season, which means two of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers will be battling to start in between the sticks for the Citizens.

"Joe Hart will be first-choice goalkeeper for the next 10 years for England," Mancini told Sky Sports.

"I don't know if he will be my first-choice, it depends. I will pick the players who deserve to play.

"I don't know if I will rotate the players, it depends. At the start of the season I will decide who is No. 1.

"Shay is not fit at the moment. He is not 100 per cent ready to go in goal but we must wait and be patient because it was not a small problem, it was a big problem two months ago and we have a month more."

MANCHESTER UNITED GOAL: What a start for United! No messing about from Wayne Rooney, then, but this goal is the making of Jay Spearing. The Liverpool midfielder is caught dwelling on the ball for too long inside his own half and is dispossessed by Antonio Valencia, who steals the ball off him to slide a perfect pass through for Rooney to fire home past Pepe Reina.

MANCHESTER UNITED GOAL: Right place, right time - 1-0 United. Wayne Rooney finds himself unmarked six yards out to coolly finish past Pepe Reina after Jordan Henderson’s attempted headed clearance from a corner arrives straight at the feet of the striker. That should liven the action up on the field good and proper.
