Roberto Mancini insists Micah Richards is part of his plans at Manchester City

Italian predicts bright future for defender…

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has confirmed defender Micah Richards is in his plans for the future.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move away from Eastlands this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool reportedly interested in his services. However, Richards has said he wishes to stay at City and fight for his place in the team.

Mancini will have to cut his squad down to 25 senior players before the end of the summer transfer window due to new Premier League rules, which sparked rumours that Richards could be offloaded.

The former England international has had an inconsistent couple of seasons but Mancini insists he is still improving.

“Micah is part of my plans,” he told the Manchester Evening News. “He’s played here for four or five years, and I think that he must improve.

“He has everything to do his job, but sometimes his concentration lets him down. Sometimes, his body is on the pitch, but his head is not. But I think that if we work on him, he will improve.

“You have to remember that he is only young. It is better for him that we work to improve every day, because he has everything he needs to become a strong player.”

Goal.com sage George Ankers has waded into the Manchester United front line debate, opining "I'll defend Michael Owen! Still my favourite footballer of all time. Give him a go!"

Seriously? I'm pretty sure there will be more chance of Sir Alex Ferguson calling Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out of retirement first.

Will he stay, will he go? I think I've read/heard every conceivable opinion of the Harry Redknapp story in the last few days. Either way, 'Arry has got a job to do at Spurs, who have lost their attacking verve in weeks gone by with the gaffer otherwise engaged.

Jermain Defoe reckons the team aren't the same without him. Do you guys think Tottenham will recapture the magic with their manager back in the dugout this afternoon? Tweet us at @GoalUK and let us know.

Sure it's a big day, but let's not forget those who have got some celebrating to do. Shaggy-haired ex-Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman turns 40 today, while Rafa Van der Vaart should be blowing out 29 candles on his cake after the Newcastle game later.

That's got us thinking about footballers with particularly apt birthday names, with our very own Jonathan Birchall offering up 'Cake Livermore' right away. I'm sure you can beat that - Tweet us with your efforts using #birthdayfootballers

Though, of course, there are other Premier League games today. Arsenal travel to The Stadium of Light to take on Martin O'Neill's resurgent Sunderland, while Norwich City and Swansea City face off in a juicy, promoted-side battle. QPR, the other team who escaped the jaws of the Championship last term, face off against fellow strugglers Blackburn.
