The Turkish side Besiktas are hoping to continue their summer spending spree by luring Aston Villa forward John Carew back to the club.
Besiktas, who have already added playmaker Guti from Real Madrid and Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma to their ranks, have now set their eyes on Norwegian striker Carew, who previously played for them in the 2004-05 season, when he scored 14 goals in 27 appearances for the Istanbul club.
The Villa hitman led the line superbly last season as the Villans battled unsuccessfully for a Champions League place, but Martin O’Neill may be tempted to sell as Carew has just 12 months remaining on his current contract.
Carew, 30, joined Villa in January 2007 in an exchange deal with Lyon involving Milan Baros moving in the opposite direction. He'd signed for Lyon from Besiktas, having previously represented Valerenga and Rosenborg in Norway, Valencia in Spain and, on loan in the 2003-04 season, Roma of Italy.
Carew has also won 84 caps for Norway, scoring 22 goals for the national team.
