Manchester City have taken pole position in the race to sign Benfica centre-back David Luiz, as Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho accepts that the player's price-tag is too high.
Mourinho told TV1 Spain, "I like him a lot, but he will not come to Madrid this year.
"There was a little contact, but the price is prohibitive. After all that was spent on last year's Madrid, now we do not have much to spend."
Los Blancos are reportedly looking to shell out £21 million ( €25m) on acquiring Milan's Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, and clearly still have transfer kitty to spend, as Stuttgart midfielder Sami Khedira also edges closer to signing.
Manchester City would now appear to be in a strong position to capture Luiz with a reported bid of £27.6m (€33m), though Premier League rivals Chelsea have also been strongly linked with the Brazilian central defender.
