The target: Mid-table security

A steady season with a high mid-table finish in the Premier League and a good FA Cup run with a few fun away trips along the way.

My thoughts on the gaffer...

According to reports Mark Hughes will be appointed our manager on Thursday. I think this is a good move by the Chairman. Mark had a good record at Blackburn and did very well with a team not so dissimilar to Fulham.

I think it would be naive to judge Mark on his time at Manchester City because he was working with players who did not want to play for him, and players whom the board bought. As always though, the players have to want to play for him as they did with Roy.

I believe that if he brings in a couple of quality players, including a new striker, then I think he will do well for us.

Our key man this season

Brede Hangeland. I've always thought that the key to a good season is the defence and he is the defensive rock of our team.

If we can keep Hangeland and Aaron Hughes fit then I believe that we will finish in the top ten.

Youngster to watch

Matthew Briggs. One time youngest player to play in the Premier League and currently away with the England Under-19 side. He looks to be one for the future but this season may be one too early.

A player who must deliver

Bobby Zamora had a great season last year but needs to continue improving. Still has his critics in some quarters of the support due to his apparent lack of effort in some situations.

However, if he keeps scoring goals and shows commitment to the cause then he will become a fans' favourite.

Our Achilles' heel

Our away record. We have never been great away from home and this needs to improve to ensure a decent finish.

Squads around us have improved and we need to ensure that we are not just relying on our home form.

Fixture I am looking forward to the most...

Fulham v Chelsea on February 12. There is always a good atmosphere when our west London neighbours visit. Hopefully we can get a solid result as it's great to go into work and amuse the Chelsea fans.

Our toughest opponents will be...

You always look at the top four and it will be good to give Hodgson a great reception when Liverpool visit but I think that Manchester City will be our toughest opponents

How much money have they spent? I think they will be a strong force this season and can't look past them for the title if the team gels.

Player we love to hate

Frank Lampard. Always have and always will hate him.

I will never forgive him for celebrating so much in front of the Hammersmith End in a Carling Cup match in 2005.

My verdict

I think that after last season we need to keep our feet on the ground. A steady season with a top 10 finish will be difficult but achievable and a good FA cup run would be good also.

…brutal honesty? We are still at the stage where we must look first to ensure survival, which must
be a pretty standard response for many supporters and helps little to make this anything like an
interesting read.
However, coupled with that cautionary view, last season’s exploits saw the expectation bar raised, so
our fingers-crossed ambitions should be to better that; probably by maintaining more consistency. As
soon as Sky and MOTD started to mention us in despatches, the form dropped off and we finished
with close to relegation form (7 defeats in the last 8 away games, the only win at doomed Pompey).
We had been in front of Everton for a large part of the season and although we finished one place
below them, we were 11 points adrift of them – keeping pace with that level of team as the season
draws to a close would be a very good return and a solid platform for continual improvement.
The ubiquitous fan hope of a Cup run is too easy to go for – personally, I would forego the short term
delight of a decent Cup run for a deserved reputation of being a strong and seasoned Premier League
team, but then Blues have been letting me down just when I truly start to believe in them for too many
years to mention, so my attitude is no doubt coloured by that.
