Aston Villa striker John Carew is not keen to set a target for how many goals he scores this season.

The Norway international scored 10 Premier League goals last season and 11 the year before for the Villans, who traded Milan Baros to Lyon for him in 2007.

The 30-year-old insists that he is working on coming into the season as fit as possible and ready to get off to a great start.

Carew is confident that he will keep scoring for Villa this season, but the Norwegian prefers not to make predictions and just let the goals come.

"I have scored a lot of goals and hopefully I will continue to score goals this season," Carew told Sky Sports.

"I don't set targets. I just set myself giving 100 per cent and being ready to go for when the games begin.

"The goals normally come by themselves.

"I am doing my best to be fit and ready for when the season starts so I can't wait to get started again.

"I will do my best to be available for the team and be an important player for the team.

"I am looking forward to the season and I am trying to get myself as fit as possible."

Villa come into the season looking to improve on their impressive sixth place finish last season and challenge for a place in the Champions League next season.

Wayne Rooney, how did you miss?! The Manchester United striker looks certain to grab his hat-trick after picking up possession inside a crowded Liverpool area, but somehow miscues his effort wide of the post. Unbelievable miss.

Couldn’t have summed up the last few minutes better myself, Gregory - so I won’t bother. But it really has been a remarkable capitulation from Liverpool, hasn’t it? While Manchester United did edge the first half, Kenny Dalglish’s side defended well for the most part in the opening 45.

Greg Stobart reports from Old Trafford: “From the hostility and hatred as the players left the pitch at half-time, the atmosphere around the stadium now is one of unconfined joy. The Stretford End is rocking to ‘we shall not be moved’ with the away end silenced by that quickfire Wayne Rooney double. Luis Suarez as spent the last five minutes shaking his head - only he knows about what - and you do wonder just how far his emotions might boil over in the remainder of the game.”
