Chelsea have denied reports that young centre back Michael Mancienne has handed in a transfer request.

Mancienne, 22, has stated his frustration this summer at his lack of first team opportunities at Stamford Bridge and had been rumoured to be set to force a move away. Wolverhampton Wanderers — where he has spent two seasons on loan — were believed to be interested in a permanent deal, while Sporting Lisbon and Sevilla had also been linked.

A club spokesman denied the transfer request claims when speaking to Sky Sports News, amid reports Mancienne could stick with the Premier League champions next term due to new squad rules. These regulations state a roster of 25 players, of which eight are homegrown, must be registered on September 1.

With Chelsea's plethora of foreign stars such as Didier Drogba, Alex and Ricardo Carvalho, the defender could finally be set for a regular after just two top flight starts in five years.
