Shay Given returns to full fitness for Manchester City
Keeper hoping to play some part in game against Club America
By George Watts
Shay Given has returned to full fitness and is hoping to feature in Manchester City's pre-season game against Club America tomorrow night.
The ex-Newcastle United shot-stopper was injured towards the end of last season at the Emirates when he fell awkwardly and dislocated his shoulder, an injury which ended his season prematurely.
However, Republic of Ireland international Given is back in training and raring to go against Club America as City continue their tour of the USA.
"I have not spoken with the manager yet but I am hoping to play a part in the game against Club America and if not tomorrow then certainly at the weekend,” the 'keeper told City's official website.
Given, 34, will be in direct competition with the promising 23-year-old English 'keeper Joe Hart as both men eye the number one jersey at Eastlands, and Given admits that it is "incredibly frustrating" when watching instead of playing.
"I have pushed myself hard but not harder than I have any other time I have been injured. All you ever want to do as a player is play. It is no different than being a kid and being desperate to get out on the pitch or the street to kick a ball about.
“I feel sharp and full of optimism for the season ahead and can’t wait to get into a game situation.”
