The target: Silverware

Easy one, win a trophy. With the squad that David Moyes has assembled we need some silverware.

We would love to win the Premier League title but that is may be just out of our reach this season. For me the League Cup or FA Cup are definitely on the radar.

My thoughts on the gaffer...

David Moyes has dragged our beloved club from annual relegation candidates to qualifying for Europe on a regular basis and has got together the best squad since the mid-1980s.

We have had a Carling Cup semi-final, an FA Cup final and Champions League football since he arrived. Everton have got what a lot of other clubs want, all his CV is missing is a trophy win, so hopefully that gap can be filled this season.

Our key man this season

Mikel Arteta. He came back from that terrible injury to drive us on after Christmas and we only just missed out on the Europa League.

Arteta is now reaching his playing peak and as long as he can stay injury free and totally focused, he will be a force to be reckoned with this season. He can totally dominate games with his vision and slide-rule passes.

Also, as a playmaker he can break things up and set us on the attack again and is deadly from any free kicks near the penalty area.

Youngster to watch

Jack Rodwell showed glimpses last season of what he can do, just ask Manchester United. Looks to have a good engine on him and is hard to shake off the ball.

Always seems to make time for himself and has great awareness of what’s going on around him. Fantastic shot as well; he finds that sweet spot more often than not.

If he gets a run in the team and scores a couple of goals early doors then it could well be lift-off.

A player who must deliver

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov scored some fantastic goals last season but did look a bit jaded in some games. Has had a complete break from football over the summer so will hopefully be fully recharged and ready to plunder some goals as well as setting up a few.

Is never going to go flying past people but can work quick passing interchanges and find space, not afraid to go in with his head either. Needs to definitely step up and show us Evertonians what he can do.

Our Achilles' heel

Ourselves
. We need to start believing a bit more.

We have got some fantastic players and we have put together some great results over the last few seasons.  This confidence needs to be taken into the games next season.

If we can get off to a good start - and there’s no reason why we can’t - then maybe we can start to believe in the team and the manager’s methods and with that little bit of luck get the trophy that we deserve.

"We have got some fantastic players and we have put together some great results over the last few seasons."
Fixture I am looking forward to the most...

Everton v Arsenal November 14. We got destroyed last season but the Joleon Lescott transfer saga didn’t help.

We did great down at their place and should have won but for two deflected goals from our hosts.

I'm mainly looking forward to this game as we are starting to play the type of passing football that Arsenal have been doing for the last few years and it would be great to beat them at their own game and gain a little bit of revenge for the 1-6 defeat.

Our toughest opponents will be...

Manchester United as we haven’t won at Old Trafford for about twenty years.  It's always a tough place to go.

We have managed a few draws in that time and even taken the lead in one or two games but never got the win. United have not really strengthened as such but this will still be a tough fixture for us.

Player we love to hate

Wayne Rooney.  I would take him back tomorrow and loved it when he broke on to the football scene with that goal against Arsenal in 2002.

He only gave us a couple of seasons but it was a great ride at the time. He always gets stick when he comes back and quite rightly so but you can’t doubt his talent.

I would prefer him to be in Everton blue but maybe one day the prodigal son will return, fingers crossed.

My verdict

I think we are well capable of finishing in the top four and with some luck could even win the title.

I do reckon our best bet is one of the cups and am not bothered which one as any silverware would be fantastic and could be that springboard to bigger and better things. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum.

LIVERPOOL GOAL: Crikey. This was in the script for all Liverpool fans, I’m sure. After Michael Carrick is booked for a trip on Luis Suarez, the ball takes a fortunate ricochet off Rio Ferdinand inside the area from the resulting free kick and the Uruguayan is on hand to stab home from close range. All to play for.

Greg Stobart reports from Old Trafford: “We’re having a bit of a lull here, on and of the pitch, but I don’t think the drama is over this afternoon. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Kenny Dalglish so passive on the touchline - he’s looking rather fed up as United look to see the game out as we head into the final 10 minutes. The visitors have never got going in the second half and United are looking very comfortable at the moment as they dominate possession.”
