Manchester United chief executive David Gill: Sir Alex Ferguson has money to spend

Red Devils boss has transfer funds available to him
Manchester United chief executive David Gill has confirmed that manager Sir Alex Ferguson has money at his disposal if he wants to buy any new players.

The Red Devils' boss has already spent in the region of £20 million on Chris Smalling from Fulham and Javier Hernandez from Guadalajara. However, the young duo are likely to provide back-up in their first season at Old Trafford.

World Cup stars Wesley Sneijder and Mesut Oezil have been linked with big money moves to United, while Ferguson is also reportedly set to rekindle his interest in Karim Benzema, who opted to join Real Madrid instead of the Red Devils last summer.

Supporters have grown increasingly frustrated at the lack of star signings since Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-breaking move to Real Madrid 12 months ago, but Gill insists the money is there for Ferguson to spend if he want to strengthen the squad.

"The money is there if we believe there is a player who can improve what we believe is a very good squad," he told The Manchester Evening News.

"The team has been together for a number of years and done very well. In order to improve it a player has to be of a very high quality."

Gill would not confirm whom United have set their sights on but says they are always looking to bring in new players.

"We are always looking at players," he added. "We are looking 365 days a year - it doesn't just start when the transfer window opens.

"We are looking at it. We studied a lot of players at the World Cup, but we knew about a lot of them before that.

"Over all I think Sir Alex is very comfortable with the squad composition. That's not to say something won't happen, but I think it is a 'might', not a 'will'.

"We will see what happens over the next six weeks."
