Sunderland and Aston Villa are locked in a battle to sign Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland, according to The Northern Echo.

The 23-year-old is out of favour at Eastlands and looks set to leave the club this summer after being linked with a host of Premier League clubs.

City boss Roberto Mancini has to cut his squad down to 25 players by the end of the summer transfer window and according to some reports has told Ireland he won’t make the squad (though other reports claim the Italian has not yet decided on his final 25).

The £10 million-rated Ireland followed up a season which saw him pick up the club’s Player of the Year award in 2008-09 by featuring in just 22 Premier League games last season, scoring twice.

He now looks almost certain to leave the club following the arrivals of Yaya Toure and David Silva, and City's expected signing of James Milner from Aston Villa.

A move to Villa could be on the cards for Ireland, possibly as part of the deal that would see Milner move to Eastlands, while Sunderland are also on the look-out for a replacement in midfield.

Lorik Cana left the club earlier this summer to join Galatasaray, and although Paraguay international Cristian Riveros has been brought in, manager Steve Bruce is still looking to add to his squad.

Any discussions regarding a move to Sunderland would not take place until the club have returned from their pre-season tour of Portugal.
