Manchester City are set to use Shaun Wright-Phillips as bait in their bid to sign James Milner from Aston Villa, according to The Mirror.

Roberto Mancini needs to trim his squad down to 25 players before the end of the summer transfer window, which means Wright-Phillips could be surplus to requirements - especially if Milner moves to Eastlands.

The Aston Villa midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to City throughout the summer, and boss Martin O’Neill revealed last week that he would allow the England international to leave at the right price.

Villa have already rejected a fee believed to be in the region of £20 million for the former Leeds United man, and are said to be holding out for a price of around £30m.

Wright-Phillips - along with Micah Richards, Stephen Ireland, Craig Bellamy and Roque Santa Cruz - can reportedly leave City this summer; and after his contract talks stalled, a move for the former Chelsea winger is more than likely.

However, Martin O’Neill may need convincing over the move after being unimpressed by City’s tactics in the transfer market so far.
