Roberto Mancini: It's up to Stephen Ireland to prove that he has a future with Manchester City
Italian acknowledges that he must cut down his roster before season starts
By Anthony Sciarrino
The 23-year-old believed that he would be dropped from the Italian’s 25-man squad for the upcoming season, but Mancini insists that Ireland can still earn a spot on his team despite his poor pre-season thus far.
“Right now I don’t know who will miss out. I have not decided anything about Stephen Ireland,” Mancini told The Daily Star.
“There has been no problem with him on the tour. I don’t know how it’s possible for him to think anything other than that he has a chance of a future here because I haven’t decided.
“It is up to him to prove himself to me.
“I made Stephen captain for the game on Sunday so that shows I still have belief in him.”
New Premier League regulations require a club to name a maximum of 25 players, leaving Mancini to question whether players like Ireland and Craig Bellamy will make the squad for the upcoming season.
“We have 30 players, maybe more, and we have to get it down to 25 before the end of August.
“So it is clear that some of the players we have here are going to be left off that list. I am not sure yet if one of those will be Craig Bellamy.
“At this moment it is impossible to know which players will be on that final list.”
