Harry Redknapp rules out Tottenham Hotspur moves for Aston Villa duo James Milner & Ashley Young, Everton's Phil Jagielka
England internationals not on Spurs' agenda...
By Matt Monaghan
Redknapp, 63, has just returned to England after a successful tour of the United States and is gearing up his plans for the new season. With a debut Champions League campaign on the horizon, the Aston Villa pair and Everton stopper were believed to be on his shopping list.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, asked whether he could meet Milner's rumoured £30 million price Redknapp claimed he couldn't enter the race with fellow suitors Manchester City.
"No, we wouldn't be able to," Redknapp admitted.
"Anybody would like James Milner, he's an outstanding young player, but he'd be way out of our depth."
The Spurs supremo claimed reports of a bid for Young were similarly wide of the mark.
"Again, I wouldn't think they'd want to sell Ashley Young," he stated.
"He is a good player but he belongs to Villa. We've not made any enquiries for him at all."
With injuries mounting up at the back, the ex-Portsmouth boss was also believed to be keen on bringing in Jagielka as Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate look set to miss the start of the season.
Redknapp was in a dismissive mood about the England international but conceded he could bolster his options in that position elsewhere. He said: "It's a possibility [signing a central defender].
"I am hoping Ledley might be OK. His knee is swollen at the moment but it goes down so we will have to wait and see.
"A good player again [Jagielka], outstanding player, but we wouldn't be in the market for someone like that."
Redknapp did remain hopeful, however, that Spartak Moscow goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa could still make the temporary switch to White Hart Lane.
"I think Daniel (chairman Daniel Levy) is talking to him and there is a possibility of loaning him," he revealed.
"We have two outstanding goalkeepers in (Heurelho) Gomes and Carlo Cudicini but I do feel that maybe we need three keepers with European games coming up.
"It is something we are interested in doing."
