Chelsea want ex-Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain to take control of their transfer policy and have made an offer to bring him to the club, according to Sport.

The former Spain international provided the platform for the Catalans' recent success as he assembled the squad that lifted every major trophy in the sport during his seven-year stay. After leaving his post this summer, a host of sides - including Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur - were believed to be keen to delve into his expertise.

Roman Abramovich is reported to handed Begiristain a deadline of September to make his decision on a switch to Stamford Bridge.

The 45-year old was understood to be keen on a sabbatical until the New Year but could cancel this plan to control player and coach recruitment with the Premier League champions.
