Blackpool and Sunderland battling to sign Manchester United youngster Danny Welbeck on loan - report
Blackpool have joined Sunderland in the race to sign Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck on loan, according to The Mirror.
The Seasiders, who won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs last season, have so made just summer signing - Israeli international defender Dekel Keinan.
Boss Ian Holloway revealed earlier this month that he has a squad of just 16 first team players and has now turned his attention to a new striker following the end of loan deals that had taken DJ Campbell and Stephen Dobbie to Bloomfield Road.
Holloway said: "We have lost the goals we had last season because DJ Campbell and Stephen Dobbie have gone back to their clubs so we need replacements urgently.
"Ideally I want someone with Premier League experience who can come straight in and do a job."
Welbeck has been a target for Sunderland throughout the summer, with assistant manager Eric Black admitting his interest in the striker earlier this month.
A move to the Stadium of Light would not be out of the question for Welbeck as the Black Cats are on the look-out for another striker after Benjani’s loan deal came to an end.
