Angeleri has signed a three-year deal with the Black Cats and made his debut for the club in their 4-2 friendly win over Hull City in Portugal, with the club waiting until after the match to officially confirm the transfer late on Saturday night.
The player was finally able to fly out to to join up with his new team-mates on their pre-season tour after delays with his paperwork — specifically Angeleri acquiring an Italian passport in order not to require a work permit — were resolved.
The 27-year-old has three senior caps for Argentina and becomes the third South American to join Sunderland, teaming up with Paraguay internationals Paulo da Silva and Cristian Riveros.
Manager Steve Bruce was happy with his side's new signing, describing the right-back as one of the best in South America.
"Marcos is a strong, powerful defender," he said to the club's official website.
"He will add depth to the squad. He is also very keen to get forward from that position so that adds an extra dimension to the side.
"He has been one of the best right full-backs in South America in recent years and has really impressed us when we've watched him."
Angeleri began his career with Estudiantes and made 175 appearances for the 2009 Copa Libertadores champions.
The defender missed out on Diego Maradona's World Cup squad after picking up an injury that forced him to miss vital qualifying games and the build-up to the tournament in South Africa.
