Manchester United to stave off Real Madrid by offering Nemanja Vidic new contract - report
Manchester United are set to make Nemanja Vidic one of the highest earners at Old Trafford with the offer of a new contract, according to a report from The Guardian.
The Serb has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent days, but United are to offer to extend his current deal by two years and boost his wages from £70,000 to £90,000 a week.
The 26-year-old's current deal still has two years left to run, but Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson seemed to be able to offer no firm guarantees that the player would be staying at the club when questioned by reporters.
Asked to explain the reports linking the defender with a move, Ferguson said: "I can't clarify it at all."
He was also asked whether the Serb would be a United player next season and simply replied: "I believe so."
However, the hierarchy at United are understood to be keen to retain the centre-back, after injuries to defenders hampered the club's title bid last season.
