Manchester City are set to make a second offer to Aston Villa for James Milner of £24 million within the next two days, according to a report from The Guardian.

Villa will apparently reject that offer, but are understood to be ready to negotiate, with manager Martin O'Neill said to be eyeing City's Stephen Ireland in a possible player-plus-cash deal.

The West Midlanders had been understood to be holding out for £30m for the player, as events took something of an acrimonious turn on Thursday.

O'Neill claimed that the player had told him that he wanted to leave Villa Park before the World Cup finals began and that the England star had been offerered a new contract at the club.

Milner was understood to be infuriated by this version of events, although Villa reportedly stood by the manager, and was seeking contact with O'Neill.

It is unknown whether or not he managed to speak to his manager, but he is believed to be very upset and his close relationship with O'Neill could be on the verge of fracturing.

Should that indeed be the case, then a move to City looks increasingly likely.
