Landon Donovan should leave LA Galaxy for Manchester City or Everton - former USA captain John Harkes
Forward urged to make Premier League return...
By Chris Myson
The 28-year-old forward is a confirmed transfer target of Roberto Mancini at City, while David Moyes would be eager to take him back to the Toffees – with whom he spent a spell on loan last season – if the circumstances were right.
Harkes, who was the first American to play in the Premier League when he played for Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and West Ham United, is of the view that Donovan should build on his impressive showings at the World Cup and move to England if he gets the chance.
"I think if the opportunity presents itself he should go," Harkes said to PA.
"Obviously it depends on what he wants as an individual but if the opportunity presents itself for him to take that challenge he needs to do it now.
“He should really commit to playing overseas and do it for a longer period of time, which is better than doing it in the short-term, like he did with Everton.
"It was a successful and fantastic experience, but he needs to do it over a longer period of time.
"That's when you get challenged in more ways, so if it's there I think he should grasp the opportunity and go for it."
Signing Donovan this summer is expected to be a tough task, though; with Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber repeatedly saying he has no plans to release the player.
