Harry Redknapp claims Liverpool signing Joe Cole 'wanted to come to Tottenham Hotspur'
Spurs supremo shocked by U-turn...
By Matt Monaghan
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has admitted he thought he had wrapped up the signing of Joe Cole before he eventually joined Liverpool.
Cole, 28, was the hottest property in the transfer market after his contract expired at Chelsea this summer. After coaching the England international as a youngster at West Ham United, Redknapp was eager to bring him to Spurs as the club prepares for its first crack at Champions League football.
Speaking to reporters in New York ahead of the friendly match against Thierry Henry's Red Bulls, Redknapp declared he was in shock at Cole's U-turn.
"I don’t know why he decided to go to Liverpool. I spoke to him a month ago and I thought he was coming here," Redknapp said.
"He wanted to come to Tottenham. He had made up his mind – I had no doubt about that.
"But a month went by and, by that time, Liverpool had moved in and maybe jumped the queue a bit."
