Fulham target Martin Jol confirms he's staying on as Ajax coach
Confusion over contract clause keeps former Spur in Eredivisie...
By Stefan Coerts & Zack Wilson
Martin Jol has made the decision to snub Premier League side Fulham and stay at Eredivisie giants Ajax.
The Cottagers were desperate to land Jol as their new manager, but will now have to turn their attention elsewhere.
Fulham are in the market for a new manager following the departure of Roy Hodgson to Liverpool, and the London side revealed last week that Jol was their primary candidate to take over the reins at Craven Cottage.
Jol initially made it clear that he'd be interested in leaving Ajax for another Premier League adventure, but director Rik van den Boog has now convinced Jol to snub Fulham in favour of the Godenzonen.
"I've always had the intention to stay at Ajax. I was just looking to get some clarity on the future of the club and that's what I got when I talked with Rik van den Boog on Wednesday evening. Fulham was just a nice alternative," was Jol quoted as saying by De Telegraaf.
"I needed to get the feeling that we're in this together and that everybody at the club wants to do his utmost to make progress. That's essential if we want to make a step forward this season."
Meanwhile, Fulham have released a statement confirming that they have given up on their pursuit of Jol, with a misconception of how the coach's contract worked seemingly the issue.
"On Thursday morning, following talks with Ajax, the club can confirm that it has ceased negotiations for the release of Martin Jol from his contract with the Dutch club," the statement on the club's official website read.
"Although Fulham had agreed personal terms with Martin Jol, Ajax were not willing to allow him to leave under any circumstances, and have held him to the terms of the contract he signed last summer.
"When Fulham commenced negotiations with Martin Jol, the club was informed that an exit clause existed in his contract with Ajax. Subsequent negotiations revealed that the clause was no longer valid and Ajax position remained steadfast in their desire to keep their manager, therefore dialogue between the two clubs has now ended.
"Ray Lewington will remain in charge of all first team matters as caretaker manager and the Club would like to thank Ray, his backroom staff and all the players for their patience and professionalism ahead of the 2010-11 Premier League season."
