Roy Hodgson: Danny Wilson signing shows Liverpool are targeting young talent
Gaffer building beginnings of bright future...
By Zack Wilson
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson believes that Scottish defender Danny Wilson is a tremendous prospect who will become a star at Anfield.
The 18-year-old centre-back joined the Reds from Rangers this week, inking a three-year deal, and Hodgson feels that the youngster's arrival shows how the club will be focusing on young talent as the new manager builds for the future.
"In tandem with what we're doing with the first team, we've got to have our eyes and ears alert to any young talent that could be future stars," Hodgson told his club's official website.
"The earlier we get them into the club the better. Against Grasshoppers we saw young players like [Nathan] Eccleston and [David] Amoo, young players who showed they've got exceptional talent - and we need more players of that type of quality. Danny Wilson is certainly one and I'm very pleased we've brought him into the club."
A young Liverpool side featuring the likes of Tom Ince, Eccleston and Amoo held Grasshoppers of Zurich to a goalless draw in Switzerland on Wednesday as the Reds' pre-season preparations continued to gather momentum.
Hodgson was very impressed with how the yongsters performed in what was a challenging game.
"The boys did very well. This is a group of boys, many of whom have never kicked a ball for the first team or even been around the first team. Players like Tom Ince, Jack Robinson and Victor Palsson are very young players," he added.
"So, to take on a team like Grasshoppers, who are towards the top of the Swiss league and who've been able to use their full squad, and get a 0-0 is a remarkable achievement with some players who've never kicked a ball outside of the Academy.
"We had some chances and were good value for the draw. We didn't get it through luck, we got it through hard work and determination.
"They've done the club proud. I had no doubts they'd do that in terms of their determination, desire and work rate but the bottom line is that at the moment there are gaps in their play because of their age. That takes time."
