Former Liverpool player Jason McAteer is convinced Joe Cole will get the support he needs to blossom at Anfield.

Cole, 28, sealed his move to the club yesterday - subject to a medical - and was reported to have been handed the famous No. 7 shirt worn by past greats such as Kenny Daliglish and Kevin Keegan. This show of faith is just one of the reasons why McAteer believed the decision to snatch the England World Cup 2010 star up on a free transfer will become a steal.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said: "I think Joe as a person is the kind of player who needs an arm round his shoulder and needs to be loved and told he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think he will get that at Liverpool.

"There's rumours he'll get the big number seven shirt. He knows he'll be the biggest signing for Liverpool this season, the fans will take to him straight away and his signing has excited everyone already."
