Santos president Luiz Alvaro de Oliveira Ribeiro insisted that he is confident of extending the loan of star striker Robinho, who has been ceded to the club from Manchester City since the start of the year.
Robinho has been a fixture in the Peixe starting XI since arriving back from England, scoring an incredible 19 times in 17 games and securing a place in Brazil's 2010 World Cup team as a result. The player is due to finish his loan contract on the 4th August, the same day as Santos are due to play in the Brazilian Cup final against Vitoria.
Ribeiro told Globoesporte, however, that he still feels confident of securing the forward for a longer period; even though Manchester City would be more interested in selling on Robinho and recouping a significant part of the massive transfer fee which they paid to Real Madrid in 2008.
"I'm optimistic. The two parties [Santos and Robinho] want to extend the loan but it is a negotiation that happens step by step. I would say that we are about halfway there. If we find that the deal is really possible, we will travel to England after the Copa do Brasil", Ribeiro revealed on Tuesday.
"The priority of all the board, staff and players at the moment however is the outcome of the Brazil Cup. We are very focused on concentrating our efforts in these two games."
