Ajax manager Martin Jol has told the club's board that he wants to succeed Roy Hodgson at Fulham, according to Sky Sports News.

Jol, 54, has emerged as chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed's choice to become the new supremo at Craven Cottage. Earlier, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager had distanced himself from reports, but now appears to have performed a U-turn and wants to return to the Premier League.

It is understand that financial constraints at the Amsterdam giants have led him back to London. Star winger Dennis Rommedahl has already been sold to Olympiacos, with World Cup 2010 stars Luis Suarez, Gregory van der Wiel and Maarten Stekelenburg likely to follow him out of the exit door.

The Dutchman is rumoured to have been offered a £20 million transfer kitty to build on Hodgson's impressive spell at the helm which culminated in a 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final last season.

Jol is also believed to have a £1 million escape clause in his contract, although the Amsterdam giants have dug their heels in about the finer details of the arrangement.

UPDATE: 17:03 BST - Goal.com UK chief correspondent Wayne Veysey says "Ajax sources confirm Martin Jol has been in talks with Dutch club all day and it is '50-50' whether he will stay at the club or move to Fulham."
