Birmingham City are setting their sights on a move for Juan Roman Riquelme, according to Sky Sports News.

The 32-year-old, who has been linked with a move to West Ham United this summer, is out of contract after ending his three-year stay with Boca Juniors.

A move to West Ham now appears to be out of the question after the club reportedly failed to meet the player’s personal terms.

However, a switch to Birmingham is still a possibility. Blues boss Alex McLeish has already splashed out £12 million on Ben Foster and Nikola Zigic, and could add Riquelme to his ranks, although terms are yet to be agreed.

Despite his recent release from Boca, Riquelme could still stay at the club after admitting last week that he would prefer to stay at the side where he began his professional career.

The former Villarreal playmaker was a star player for Argentina during the 2006 World Cup, but was not named in the squad for the tournament this year following an apparent bust-up with manager Diego Maradona.
