Interest in Saint-Etienne centre-back Yohan Benalouane appears likely to prise the defender away from the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard this summer, and it’s Premier League side Newcastle United who are currently making the greatest effort to sign the defender, according to L’Equipe.

With just one year remaining on his contract with les Verts, Benalouane has already made it very clear to his formative club that he will not be penning a new deal, quickly leading a clutch of clubs to circle.

Interest is most prominent from Britain, where the Magpies and West Ham United are joined by Scottish Premier League outfit Rangers in their desire for the player. La liga heavyweights Sevilla are also said to hold an interest, although it is Chris Hughton's side who have shown the most willingness to seal a deal so far.

A sturdy but sometimes raw 23-year-old, Benalouane first started making serious tracks in les Stephanois’ first team two seasons ago but established himself as a regular last term, partly aided by a chronic injury crisis at the club.

Having shown himself capable in the middle of the defence, Benalouane now feels it is time to take a step forward in his career by moving abroad and Saint-Etienne have little option but to sell, unless they are prepared to lose him for nothing after his contract expires next summer.

Compensating for the likely loss of Benalouane, ASSE are expected to formalise the signing of USA captain Carlos Bocanegra early in the week, with an announcement possible later on Monday.
