Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called for a stop to rumours on Cesc Fabregas' future following his sides 4-0 defeat of Barnet.

The Gunners captain has been the subject of a long drawn out saga over the summer with Barcelona eager to sign the 23-year-old.

Speaking after the game, Wenger told reporters: “Yes there was too much talk. I always said we really want him to stay.

“He's an important player for us and our captain and we want to keep him.

"That's why we weren't listening to any offers. We work very hard to have strong young players and we want to keep him.”

“[The talk] has stopped and we never wanted it to start anyway”

Arsenal captain Fabregas signed an eight-year deal with the Gunners in 2006 but is believed to be in favour of a move back to Barcelona.

Fabregas began his career with Barcelona where he spent six years at the Nou Camp as a youth team player before making the switch to North London in 2003.
