Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has said he is prepared to give striker Xisco another chance at the club if he impresses during their pre-season campaign.

The Spanish striker spent last season on loan in La Liga with Racing Santander, after the North East side looked to cut their wage-bill following their disastrous relegation to the Championship in the 2008-09 season.

But the 24-year-old, who cost the promoted club a cool £5.7 million in 2008, returns to a side who recovered their Premier League status at the first time of asking, and now looks set to be given a second opportunity to prove his worth at St. James’ Park.

"Xisco is in very good spirits, but that's what his personality has been like during his time with the club," Hughton told The Chronicle.

"I think he looks at everything as an opportunity.

"Last season we allowed him to go on loan to Racing Santander and what we need to do now is assess him and then make decisions.

"He's still young, and in the pre-season we'll see how he is and take it from there."

Xisco, who still has three years left on his contract with Newcastle, is likely to get his first chance to impress in Saturday’s friendly against Carlisle.

Only Danny Simpson and Jonas Gutierrez, the Argentina international who featured in the World Cup, are unavailable for the game.

Xisco has made a total of nine appearances, five of which were from the substitutes’ bench, for the promoted club and scored just once so far.
