Blackpool have lost the race to get their Bloomfield Road stadium up to scratch for their Premier League opening day clash with Wigan.

The game on Satuday August 14 will now be played at the DW Stadium as work on upgrading the East Stand couldn't be completed in time.

"This is the only Blackpool fixture that will be affected," said a Premier League statement.

"This decision will give both clubs and fans maximum time to plan accordingly."

The Seasiders asked for an away fixture to kick off their first ever Premier League season but were dealt a home tie, as they worked on upping the ground's capacity to 17,600.

"The board felt it was important to take this decision as early as possible if there was any potential for Blackpool FC's stadium not being ready for the first match of the season," added the Premier League statement.

"The board would like to put on record its thanks to both Wigan Athletic FC and Wigan RL [rugby league] whose flexibility in the circumstances has been extremely helpful."

Blackpool will the travel to Arsenal on 21 August before they hope to welcome Fulham on 28 August.
