New Manchester City signing Yaya Toure claims reported £221,000-a-week contract is no less than he deserves

Manchester City new boy Yaya Toure has refused to condemn his reputed £221,000 a week contract as excessive.

Toure, 27, made the £25 million switch from Barcelona this summer and was reported to have been lured to Eastlands on a huge contract. Speaking to the News of the World, he was in no mood to criticise the enormous deal.

"In Europe, sanctions would already have been applied, whereas in Africa life very quickly gets back to normal as if nothing happened," Toure said.

"In Greece people often said to me that with all the money I was making I must be the richest person in my country. What an idiotic thing to say.

"The more you live in poverty, the more you need things. I would like to tell my brothers not to listen to these people who, in my opinion, are lesser people inside their souls.

"It's true that African players have to work harder.

"We don't have any African press in Europe. That doesn't help. The upside to that is that we Africans develop a strong mentality to never give up.

"We arrive here in Europe, we feel alone, so we invest ourselves fully in our work. Life makes things harder for an African, that's the way it is."
