Manchester City tempt Benfica with £29m offer for David Luiz - report

Manchester City may be on the verge of prising Brazilian defender David Luiz away from Portuguese champions Benfica.

City are thought to have had a £26.7 million (€32m) bid turned down, but it seems that an offer of an additional £2.5m (€3m) might just be too much to refuse.

The defender currently has a release clause in his contract in the region of £41.8m (€50m), and while the Lisbon club are not expecting to land that kind of fee, they do appear to be playing hard-ball with the English side.

A Bola report that the Lisbon Eagles would love to see David Luiz stay for it least for one more season to help them retain their league title and serve as a vital asset during their Champions League campaign.

Club chairman Luis Filipe Vieira is reluctant to undo a title-winning squad, but with the vast majority of any fee likely to go straight into his transfer fund, Vieira and head coach Jorge Jesus would at least have a considerable pool of finance from which to fund new reinforcements.

Reports are suggesting City are willing to more than treble the Brazilian's wages and Benfica obviously have to take the player's wishes into account.

Luiz, who is a Brazilian under-20 international, joined Benfica in 2007 from Vitoria. After a shaky start to his career in Portugal, he played 47 times last season en route to Benfica's first title in five years.

Of course, the biggest talking point at Old Trafford will be Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez re-locking horns, with the latter facing United for the first time after receiving an eight game ban for racially abusing the former. Both managers have been outspoken in their defence of their players this week, with Sir Alex Ferguson musing in today's programme notes that his "biggest regret is the way Patrice has been castigated in some quarters for standing up to racism".

As with in the Goal.com towers this week, debate has raged on Twitter as to who Sir Alex Ferguson should pair Wayne Rooney with for today’s showstopper with Liverpool. Chicarito and Danny Welbeck have got their fair share of fans, while Dimitar Berbatov is the romantics’ choice, following his spectacular overhead effort in the corresponding fixture last term. Stoic defenders of Michael Owen seem few and far between though.

Sandwiched between today’s showcase early and late kick-offs – Liverpool’s subplot-ridden trip to Old Trafford and ‘Arry’s return to the hot seat at White Hart Lane – is a set of pretty spicy looking 3pm-ers. Here’s what our Goal.com soothsayers (attending all today’s Premier League games) think will go down.
