Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is contemplating a move for Aston Villa winger Ashley Young as the manager is keen to add more British players to his new squad.
After struggling to a disappointing seventh place finish in the Premier League last season, the Reds are worried that stars Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres could leave as a result.
Hodgson is looking to find out from Villa boss Martin O’Neill what it would take to acquire Young, who turns 25 next week, this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
The England international has been a key player for Villa since he came over from Watford for £10 million in 2007 and Hodgson is aware that rules changes regarding the amount of foreign players allowed at a club could force the team to acquire more British players.
“We would be foolish not to be aware of the importance of homegrown players with the way UEFA and Premier League rules are going,” Hodgson said.
“Otherwise we're going to struggle to get our squad numbers together.
“I think the club have been trying to do that already with younger players like Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling but it takes time for them to come through so we might have to go into the transfer market.”
Liverpool have already sold Yossi Benayoun to Chelsea for £6.5 million and star midfielder Javier Mascherano is linked with a £25 million move to Barcelona.
