Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed they are hoping to sign Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne on a permanent deal.

The 22-year-old has spent most of the last two seasons on loan at Molineux and manager Mick McCarthy is keen to make the youngster his fifth signing of the summer so far.

McCarthy has already brought in Jelle Van Damme from Anderlecht, Burnley's Steven Fletcher and Hull City duo Steven Mouyokolo and Stephen Hunt.

And McCarthy insists that owner Steve Morgan is willing to spend more money to ensure the club can avoid relegation from the Premier League for the second consecutive year.

According to the Press Assocation, McCarthy said:  If Chelsea say he's available then we would have an interest. Until they clarify what their plans for Michael [Mancienne] are, it's very difficult to comment.

"We think the world of Michael at this club - he's a good player, he knows the set-up and he's a popular lad with the squad.

"I think Michael's future depends on what home-grown players Chelsea bring in because they have a balance to strike.

"It's not like going to Tesco and taking tins off the supermarket shelf - as we all know, getting the right players is very difficult.

"The biggest issue is where Chelsea see Michael's future."
