Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reiterated his desire to clinch the signing of Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, insisting the club must convince the Gunners to change their mind.

“The conversations with Arsenal are at a stage where both sides have made the first move – we made an offer and they turned it down,” Laporta told Barcelona's official website.

“We’re still interested and we respect their position but we’ll try and make them change their minds."

Despite Fabregas’ admission that he wants to join Barca, Arsenal are reluctant to let their captain go and have repeatedly warned the Spanish giants off their star player.

“Everyone knows the difficulties there are in any operation where, though the player wants the move, the club defends its own interests,” Laporta continued.

“If one of my players who had done everything for the club, who was the team captain, told the club that his time had come to an end, I would immediately open the doors for him while defending the interests of the club.”

Reports in Spain claim Fabregas hopes to settle his future before the Furia Roja kick off their World Cup campaign against Switzerland on June 16.

”It would be good if this could be done before the World Cup,” added Laporta, who is hoping to seal the deal before his presidency ends at the end of June.

“It’s something all the presidential candidates want, the manager wants and the director of sport wants.”
