Porto's Radamel Falcao on Tottenham Hotspur's radar - report
The Colombian striker could fit the bill for Redknapp's 'special' player...
By Alex Young
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing a £16 million bid for Porto striker Radamel Falcao.
The 24-year-old has been a possible target for the Premier League outfit for a long time, with previous managers Martin Jol and Juande Ramos - and now current boss Harry Redknapp - all casting an eye over the Colombian international.
Redknapp has made no secret of the fact he wants to bring one ‘special’ summer signing to White Hart Lane to boost their chances in next season’s Champions League and, if the Portuguese newspapers are to be believed, Falcao could be that signing.
Falcao has been at Porto for just one season, arriving from Argentine side River Plate, and hit the ground running at his new club. After coming to Estadio do Dragao with a goalscoring record for River Plate of 45 goals in 115 appearances, the Colombian showed no signs of slowing up with a return of 34 goals in 40 appearances.
Redknapp could be wary of his prowess on a bigger stage than either Argentina's or Portugal's domestic leagues, but the Colombian has managed 18 goals in just 24 appearances at senior iinternational level, and managed to hit the back of the net four times in seven games during his debut Champions League season.
The striker in rumoured to be disillusioned with life in Portugal after the club suffered a very disappointing season, despite his goals. Porto are not in the best financial situation at the moment, so even though they are asking for close to £20m for the player’s services, a bid of around £16m should see him in a Spurs’ shirt next season.
