A Boaz Myhill own goal eased Blackburn Rovers past ten-men Hull City at Ewood Park as Sam Allardyce's men took a big step towards Premier League safety.

Rovers boss Sam Allardyce made three changes to the side that lost to Stoke City with Michel Salgado, El-Hadji Diouf and Keith Andrews all returning to the starting line-up that again featured Nikola Kalinic as the lone targetman.

Hull manager Phil Brown, looking to build on the victory against Manchester City and record their first away win in the league this season, named an unchanged side featuring the duel threat of
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Jozy Altidore up-front together.

Rovers had the first chance of the game after they were rewarded a free-kick for a foul on Nikola Kalinic. 30 yards out
, Morten Gamst Pedersen floated in the free-kick and Ryan Nelsen headed towards goal, but Boaz Myhill tipped it over acrobatically to deny the hosts and early lead.

Minutes later and down the other end, Hull had their first sighter. Stephen Hunt flicked
Hesselink through on goal in the box and the Dutch forward shot for the bottom corner only to be denied by a great save by Paul Robinson, who got down well to push the effort round the post.

Rovers were still pushing for that early lead and they got it with 16 minutes on the clock.

A lofted through ball down the left channel was collected by Martin Olsson, and limp defending by Anthony Gardner let the Swede cut into the box. From an acute angle Olsson produced a low cross-shot which hit Myhill's ankle and went into the back of the net for an embarrassing own-goal.

It was poor goalkeeping from the glovesman and the hosts now started to push forward with confidence.

Kalinic had a great chance to double the lead when he was squared the ball by Olsson but the striker shot straight at Myhill and the keeper held the ball securely this time.

The Tigers were looking shaky and things got worse for them five minutes before the break.

In the middle of the pitch, Pedersen and George Boateng both jumped and challenged for the ball in the air but the Dutchman seemed to lead with his elbow and clattered the Norwegian in the back of the head.

Both players went to ground but referee Lee Probert only saw one victim and produced the red for Boateng, despite the fierce protestations from the Hull players.

The sending off forced Brown into a tactical change and
Hesselink was withdrawn for Seyi Olofinjanar.

The Tigers held on until the break but were lucky that they weren't worse off by two or three goals. More was needed from the side after the break if they were to come away with anything.

The second half and Rovers resumed as the aggressor with Hull more cautious and trying to pick the moments they came forward to attack.

El Hadji Diouf made his presence felt when he battled past defender Paul McShane and played a ball into the danger area only for Steven N'Zonzi to drag his shot wide.

Diouf was next involved in a move that should have sealed the game for Rovers with his excellent weighted pass releasing Brett Emerton one-on-one with Myhill. Composure in front of goal deserted the Australian though and he shot into the body of the keeper who managed to smother the ball safe.

Allardyce made an attacking change by bringing off Emerton for striker Jason Roberts to try and find the game-killing goal.

Rovers were turning the screw but were denied by the save of the match as the half ticked by.

Pedersen floated in a free-kick and the ball was deflected to the back post where Gael Givet pounced and smacked a header point blank at goal but incredible reflex form Myhill saw him swipe the ball away from the goalmouth.

The Tigers were holding on but as long as the game stayed one-nil they had a chance to steal something.

Their best chance to do that arrived late when they were awarded a free-kick but Kamil Zayatte could only head tamely at Robinson.

No late goals arrived though and despite an attempt at a late comeback by the visitors, Rovers held on easily for the three points as Hull's dismal away record continues.
