Fulham are closing in on the signings of Mark Hudson and Matt Smith from Championshp rivals Cardiff City and Leeds United, Goal understands.

Fulham are hopeful of signing Hudson, 32, on a free transfer and are in talks about capturing Smith for around £1.5 million.

Manager Felix Magath is keen to strengthen his squad before the close of the transfer window after a disastrous start to the season for the former Premier League club.

The Cottagers have secured just a single point from their opening five league fixtures of the campaign and are second from bottom of the table.

Centre-back Hudson has been targeted to bolster Fulham's defence, while Smith has been lined up to play in a withdrawn striker role behind ex-team-mate Ross McCormack, who left Elland Road for £11m earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Bryan Ruiz could be a high-profile departure from Craven Cottage on deadline day.

Fulham are trying to thrash out a deal with Werder Bremen for the Costa Rica international.
