The United States international is desperate for regular game time, having been afforded limited opportunities since joining the Potters in January 2013.

Clubs in Germany and Netherlands are also in the mix to recruit the winger but the Saints need cover on the flanks after a busy summer of star sales.

Shea spent a brief loan spell with Barnsley in the Championship last season but would prefer a move to the continent if Southampton's negotiations collapse rather than a potential return to the second tier.

The 24-year-old was sent back to Stoke after playing eight games for the Tykes after making an offensive gesture towards the club's own fans after a 5-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town.

Shea has made five appearances - including only one start, in the League Cup - for the Potters since his £2.5 million move from FC Dallas.
