Napoli forward Eduardo Vargas is on his way to England for a medical as QPR look set to trump Sunderland for his signature, Goal understands.

Arsenal had been monitoring the 24-year-old but have backed away from any potential deal, with QPR now favourites to sign the player despite the Black Cats having first agreed a deal in principle.

Vargas's representatives had been in talks with both clubs over an initial £1 million move, with a view to a £10m transfer next year.

Gus Poyet is a huge fan of the player and the Sunderland boss had been attempting to convince him over a switch to the Stadium of Light.

However, Goal reported earlier on Monday that the London club are Vargas's preferred option, despite Poyet's persistence.

Manager Harry Redknapp is also confident of signing the 24-year-old, telling reporters on Tuesday that he is "hopeful" over sealing a deal ahead of his side's Premier League meeting with Tottenham on August 24.

Vargas featured in all four of Chile's World Cup matches and scored in the 2-0 group stage triumph over Spain.
