Newcastle United are planning a double swoop for Nottingham Forest youngsters Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow, Goal understands.
But Newcastle have made a shock move to try to secure a deal for the pair, which would see them both loaned back to Forest for the whole of the 2014-15 Championship season.
Lascelles, 20, has been scouted by a number of top-flight sides, has represented England at various youth levels and spent a brief spell on loan at Stevenage in 2012.
Darlow, 23, is regarded as one of England's brightest goalkeeping prospects and established himself as Forest No.1 towards the end of the 2012-13 season.
Beating some of the Premier League's biggest clubs to land Lascelles and Darlow would represent a significant coup for Newcastle, who have made several signings already this summer.
French pair Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere have made the move to St James' Park, along with Daryl Janmaat, Siem de Jong, Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez.
Argentine striker Facundo Ferreyra also sealed a move to St James' Park on Sunday, joining on a one-year loan deal from Shakhtar Donetsk.
