The Blaugrana are understood to be in the market for a centre-back after Carles Puyol's retirement and with the threat of a suspended transfer ban hanging over them, having already made several other signings this summer.

Vertonghen was disappointing in his second season at White Hart Lane but has nonetheless drawn links to Camp Nou and Mustapha Nakhli, his representative, says that plenty of heads have been turned.

He told Het Nieuwsblad: "Several teams are interested in Jan. I cannot confirm or deny whether Barcelona are one of them.

"Tottenham is not a small club. It’s too soon to give them an answer. Several clubs have registered their interest in Jan. We'll see."

Vertonghen joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012 and has since made over 80 appearances for the north London club.

Also capable of playing at left-back, he helped Belgium to the quarter-finals of World Cup 2014 before they were eliminated by Argentina.
