The Spanish outfit had rejected an initial £28 million bid from Louis van Gaal's side, but with the midfielder having arrived at Carrington for a medical on Wednesday, a move always seemed likely to be agreed.

And the way is now clear for the 24-year-old to sign for the Red Devils in what would represent Van Gaal's first signing since replacing David Moyes as manager.

"The Football League has certified Athletic Club that player Ander Herrera Agüera has fulfilled the requirements of the applicable regulations valid for unilateral termination of the employment contract that bound him to our club, by depositing today the amount of compensation established in the contract," a statement from the Spanish club read.

"The Athletic Club thanks Ander Herrera for his dedication during the three seasons he has enjoyed with the club and wishes him the best in his future sports projects."

The Old Trafford outfit have been chasing the playmaker for over a year, with Moyes having initially been knocked back with a £25.5m bid back in August 2013.
