The Netherlands international has not featured in the Premier League under Roberto Martinez and is believed to be seeking a move away from Goodison Park.

However the 30-year-old has opted not to join Sam Allardyce's side despite talks with the east London club, and will need to look elsewhere to escape Everton.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Heitinga said: "The deal has been cancelled. This has nothing to do with money, but is only about the feeling I got.

"This might be the most important decision of my career, so everything has to be just right. We reached the conclusion that this is not the case after we held talks."

West Ham were defeated 2-1 by Fulham on Wednesday and currently have centre-backs James Tomkins, James Collins and Winston Reid all injured.

Heitinga has played just twice this season - both in the Capital One Cup - but will be looking to secure his place at the World Cup for the Netherlands.
