Arsenal have made a club-record £40 million bid for the German international with Wenger hoping to complete a deal before Monday's 23.00BST deadline.
It has been a difficult summer for Arsenal, with the club failing in their attempts at bringing Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney and Karim Benzema to north London.
Gareth Bale's world-record transfer from White Hart Lane to the Bernabeu on Sunday means that Madrid are willing to part with Ozil and, potentially, winger Angel Di Maria.
But it is Ozil, who plays just behind the striker for Carlo Ancelotti's men, who is the Gunners' main target.
