Spurs have offered the Argentine attacker a five-year, £65,000-per-week deal and have indicated to the Rome club that they will meet his £29.9 million asking price.

The 21-year-old is Spurs' "top priority" as they look to replace Gareth Bale, who is expected to join Real Madrid imminently.

Reports had suggested that Lamela was in London to tie up a deal, but he will travel up the west coast of Italy with his team-mates as Rudi Garcia's men get their Serie A campaign underway.

Andre Villas-Boas was dealt a blow on Thursday as it emerged that Willian, who had undertaken a medical with Spurs, had been subject of a new bid from Chelsea.

The Portuguese boss had hoped that both Willian and Lamela would soften the blow of losing Bale, but the Brazilian attacker will now move to Stamford Bridge from Anzhi Makhachkala for £31.6m.
