The Magpies lost their opening game of the season 4-0 against Manchester City and suffered further setbacks as Jonas Gutierrez picked up an injury and Steven Taylor was shown a red card.

Alan Pardew's men were without star midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who was subject to a bid from Arsenal just hours before kick-off on Monday, and Tiote feels that his side must act to bolster a struggling squad.

The Ivorian midfielder told the Daily Mirror: "Honestly, I think we need some more players in the squad because we don't have a big squad.

"Now we've got Steven Taylor out for three games and Jonas Gutierrez is injured. It's going to be tough on us because we don't have a big squad. I hope the chairman is going to spend money on the club."

Tiote played 31 matches for the Magpies last season without scoring.
