The Magpies' quiet transfer window has seen French striker Loic Remy arrive on a season-long loan from QPR, while the club continue their efforts to sign Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis.

Reports have suggested that Downing would be available for £5 million this summer, but Pardew insists Newcastle are not one of the clubs interested in the 29-year-old.

"I'm a little bit surprised because there was no enquiry from us," Pardew told reporters.

"We certainly haven't made any moves towards Stewart. He's a fine player and a Liverpool player."

Downing scored three goals and provided five assists in 29 Premier League appearances for Liverpool last season, after failing to notch a league goal in his maiden campaign at Anfield.
